Why this, why now

It’s the most common presentation of childhood and it rarely says its own name.

Children seldom announce “I feel anxious.” They say their tummy hurts. They cling, they refuse, they end up in the school sick-bay. Clinicians often hold pieces of the answer - a breathing exercise here, a worksheet there - without a sequenced, child-friendly method that holds together from the first session to relapse prevention.

It hides in the body.

Headaches, nausea, sleep trouble and irritability are read as anything but anxiety - so it goes untreated for years.

Good intentions feed it.

Reassurance and accommodation calm the moment and quietly strengthen the worry for families and clinicians alike.

Pieces aren’t a plan.

Scattered techniques don’t add up to treatment. What changes outcomes is a method, sequenced and made developmentally real.

This webinar gives you that method and something the child physically takes home.

What you’ll learn

Six capabilities you can use the next working day.

By the end of the session you’ll be able to…

1Describe how the fear system works in school-aged children, and tell normal worry from a clinical anxiety disorder.
2Run a developmentally-appropriate assessment - somatic presentation, validated measures and family accommodation.
3Summarise the evidence base for CBT and parent-based approaches, and outline the shape of a course of treatment.
4Teach a child to externalise and resource the body - naming the worry, breathing, a personalised calm kit.
5Build realistic thinking and a graded exposure hierarchy - the “fear ladder” - grounded in inhibitory-learning principles.
6Coach parents from accommodation to supportive scaffolding, and assemble a take-home Courage Power Pack.
The webinar

Two and a half hours, built as one clear arc.

Six modules move from how anxiety works, through assessment and the evidence, into the hands-on tools with a short break after Module 3.

1
0:00–0:20

Foundations

The over-sensitive alarm; the three systems - body, thoughts, behaviour and the avoidance engine that keeps anxiety alive.

2
0:20–0:40

Assessment & formulation

Somatic presentations, validated measures (SCAS, RCADS), and mapping family accommodation without blame.

3
0:40–1:05

The evidence base

Why CBT is front line, how a course is shaped, and the parent-only SPACE approach - then a 10-minute break.

4
1:15–1:40

Resourcing & externalising

Naming and bossing back the worry; breathing, the calm kit and the worry box - giving the child something to do with the feeling.

5
1:40–2:05

Cognitive work & exposure

Detective thinking and the fear ladder - the active ingredient - paced collaboratively with the child.

6
2:05–2:25

Parents as courage coaches

Shifting parents from accommodating to supportive, and assembling the take-home Courage Power Pack.

The take-home

Grounded in the research

Built on what the published evidence supports.

The method draws on decades of research into childhood anxiety. These figures describe findings from the published literature - not a result promised to any individual clinician or child.

~1 in 15
children meet criteria for an anxiety disorder - the most common presentation of childhood.
Polanczyk et al., 2015
~49%
of children no longer met criteria for their primary anxiety diagnosis after CBT, against ~18% on a waitlist.
James et al., 2020 (Cochrane)
~40+ yrs
Decades of randomised trials
(first child-anxiety RCT: Kendall, 1994)
→Landmark programs you’ll see referenced: Coping Cat (Kendall) and Australia’s Cool Kids (Macquarie).
→The CAMS trial (Walkup et al., 2008) found CBT, sertraline and especially their combination all outperformed placebo.
→The parent-only SPACE program (Lebowitz et al., 2020) reduced accommodation and was non-inferior to treating the child directly.
Who it’s for

Made for clinicians who see anxious children.

Pitched at a foundational–intermediate level - useful whether you’re building a first method or sharpening one you already use. It builds knowledge and skill; you apply it within your own scope, training and supervision.

  • You’re a psychologist, counsellor, social worker or allied health clinician working with 5–12 year olds.
  • You want one coherent method, not another folder of disconnected handouts.
  • You’d like ready-to-use, child-facing tools you can personalise in session.
  • You want 2.5 CPD hours from a practical, clinically grounded session.

Good to know

  • Fully on demand – watch at your own pace.
  • No prior CBT background is assumed; it builds from foundations.
  • Clinical strategies are drawn from CBT, narrative and parent-coaching literatures.
  • You remain responsible for adapting them to each child’s developmental level, presentation and risk.
